"Our life is short, but our art is great. Opportunities leave, and experience fools, leading us to errors. It is difficult to judge the facts correctly. It is not enough for the doctor to do what he needs, it is necessary to help the sick and his own and the circumstances "
Hippocrates Aphorism by addressing his disciples.
The idea of evidence-based medicine (EMB) was first used by a team of researchers by Gordon Guyatt at McMaster University in Canada. Since then, the term "evidence-based medicine" is widely used and defined as the incorporation into daily practice of the most valid research results and indications tailored to the needs and values of each patient.
The adoption of the EBM has limited the arbitrary implementation of interventions with unproven effectiveness and enormous variations in the treatment of common illness by providing doctors with a common therapeutic denominator. At the same time, in order for the physician to be able to offer the best possible treatment to his patients, he recognized the need to specialize in specific anatomical areas with common pathology and treatment data.
Digestive surgery is part of general surgery, with a wide range of anatomical (hernias, hemorrhoids), oncological (cancer), functional (gastroesophageal reflux), bariatric (obesity) diseases of the digestive tract and the abdomen. Both in Europe and in America there have been special sections of digestive surgery for many years, in hospitals and clinics. The specialization of surgeons in this field, combined with the application of laparoscopic surgery and modern minimally invasive techniques, led to better results, shorter duration and cost of hospitalization, as well as a quicker return of the patient to his daily activities and work.
